2009–2013 HADEN Engineering Sydney: National Engineering Manager

HADEN Engineering is part of Norfolk Group, a large public Engineering Company specialising in mechanical, electrical and Fire Protection engineering design and construction. Haden has 38 branches all over Australia. I was responsible for providing engineering design and supports to all branches including major projects. My direct and indirect staff comprise numerous senior engineers and draftmen based in Sydney, Canberra, Victoria, Brisbane and Perth. I provided leadership and participated in the design and execution of the following major projects:

  • MacQuarie University Library- Sydney. This is a design & Construct project employing high technology and several sustainability measures such as: Cold water Storage Tanks, low temperature VAV, low volume VAV, motion detection zone controls….etc.

    Brief role & responsibilities: I was the Engineering Manager responsible for design and performance all the HVAC disciplines
  • 76 Berry St Trigeneration- Sydney: This is a Design & Construct and Haden was appointes as the main contractor responsible for all mechanical, electrical, fire protection and building works. The project introduced a new Trigeneration Plant (Gas Generators, Storage Tanks, Heat Recovery…etc) and refurbishment of the existing mechanical services system. The project was executed while the building is operational and without any disruption.

  • Niecon Plaza Plaza Upgrade – Gold Coast: The project is a Design and Construct project to refurbish and improve the mechanical services system. Haden was appointed as the main contractor responsible for all mechanical, electrical and fire protection work.

  • Royal Darwin Hosopital Plant Upgrade- Darwin: The project was designed by AECOM and constructed by Haden. The works comprise upgrading and replacement of all mechanical plant equipment. Works were excecuted without any disruption to the Hospital operation.

  • Geelong Office Building NABERS Upgrade- Geelong: This is a design and Construct project with a clear objective: rasing the building from a 0 star NABERS to 3.0 star NABERS. Haden was appointed as the main contractor responsible for all works to achieve the above project objective. The works comprised mainly upgrading and replacement of the chilled water system, the air handling system, the Heating system and the BMS

2006–2009 Waterman International London: Project Director

Waterman Group is a large international Consulting Engineering and Project Management company with head office in London and subsidiaries all over the world. I was posted to London to manage the engineering design and construction of large multidiscipline projects.

  • Abu Dhabi Plaza Project in Astana, Kazakhstan. A large mixed development with a budget of approx 2.0 Billion $A. The development will create a “city within a city” for Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan. The project objectives required that the development to achieve a world renowned long term development and create a bench mark in Kazakhstan. Sustainability was also a major concern and the entire project was set to achieve as a minimum “Silver’ rating in LEED. The total construction area of about 550,000sqm comprised:
    • 92,000 sqm of retail space including food courts and entertainment facilities
    • 5000 sqm of Central market and bazaar
    • 125,000 sqm of high rise residential (88 levels)
    • 80,000 sqm of high rise premium grade office building
    • 3000 sqm of a Light railway Station
    • 216,000 sqm of underground and above ground car park

      Brief role & responsibilities: I was the Project Director responsible for all the HVAC disciplines (mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, fire, transportation, sustainability, acoustics and security). I managed a large team of senior Directors and Managers from Sydney office, Melbourne office, London office and Kazakhstan office
  • Zaryadye Project in Moscow, Russia. A large development with the theme “Culture” was to be built on a site next to the Red Square in Moscow, Russia. A construction budget of approx 1.0 Billion $A was anticipated to create a world class facility to represent Russian Culture to the World. The total construction area of 350,000sqm comprised:
    • 3500 seat Multi Cultural Hall of approx 42,000 sqm
    • 1200 seat Philharmonic Hall and 500 seats Variety Hall of approx 22,000sqm
    • 45,000 sqm of Museum and Banqueting Halls
    • 45,000 sqm of Retail
    • 80,000 sqm of 5 star hotels30,000 sqm of premium grade residential

      Brief role & responsibilities: I was the Project Director responsible for all disciplines including HVAC, Structures and Civil Engineering. I managed 2 teams of seniors Directors and Managers from Sydney and Moscow.
  • Warsaw Spire Project in Warsaw, Poland. A large commercial development to align Warsaw with other capital of the World. The project brief required that the entire development to be of premium grade and reflect the standards and quality enjoyed by buildings of similar nature. Sustainability and energy management were also high on the agenda. The total construction area of 300,000sqm comprised:
    • 80,000 sqm of high rise premium grade office building (50 level tower)
    • 45,000 sqm of low rise premium grade office buildings
    • 72,000 sqm of high rise premium grade residential (44 level tower)
    • 105,000 sqm of Retails and underground car park
      Client: GHELAMCO POLAND SP- Warsaw, Poland

  • New Holland Development in St Petersburg, Russia. Situated near the centre of St Petersburg city (the second largest city in Russia) is an island of 76,000sqm triangle surrounded by 2 canals and 1 river. This island was used by the Navy during the Soviet regime as a naval prison and naval testing/storage facilities. The existing building are classified and to be maintained and restored. The project brief required that this existing site to be converted into a high class cultural and commercial centre but still maintaining its historic and cultural identity. The new development will create a focal activity centre for St Petersburg city. The total construction area of 200,000 sqm comprised:
    • A new 2000 seat Festival Hall
    • A new 1500 seat Amphitheatre incorporating the internal lake. This facility features winter sports
    • Conversion of the Naval Prison into a 400 seat Recital Hall for traditional opera, dance…etc.
    • A new premium grade office building
    • A new 5 star hotel
    • Conversion of the 3 existing large timber warehouses into high class residential and serviced apartments
    • Retails on the ground level of all buildings
    • New 3 levels of underground and under water level car park

2000-2006 Waterman AHW Ltd Sydney: Project Director

Managed and controlled the design and supervision of the HVAC works, some including structures, of the following recent projects:

  • Major Tenancy Fitouts: Trading floor, Trading rooms, Computer rooms, Communication rooms for large companies including: Sydney Futures Exchange (SFE), Deloitte Touch Tohmatsu (DTT), Deutch Bank, Blake Dawson Waldron, Andersen Consulting, ABN Amro...
  • ADI mine Hunter Factory, New Castle. New building for the manufacture of the Navy Mine Hunter frigates. In this project I acted as the Project Manager in the Leighton Construction team, responsible for the engineering systems including: mechanical, electrical, resin storage, pollution control and bulk fuel storage. The project won an Engineering Excellence award.
  • Arnotts Biscuits Factory, Huntingwood, NSW: In 2004, I was acting as the Project Manager for Arnotts Biscuits. The project was successfully delivered with the following brief scope:
    • Design and documents of a new cream biscuit production line
    • Upgrading associated facilities such as flower storage, baking ovens...etc
    • Installation supervision
    • Testing & commissioning
  • Goodman Fielder Bakery Factory in Green Acres, Sydney. In 2003, I was acting as the Project Manager during the design phase and as Construction Manager during the construction phase for the new Goodman Fielder factory in Green Acres, NSW. The project was delivered on time with the following brief scope:
    • Design and documents for the factory (a total budget of 25 millions) using an existing warehouse
    • Tender and selection of a builder (Coleman & Fairburn Ltd) and services contractors
    • Construction management including site inspections, meeting
    • Testing and commissioning
  • Saigon Pearl Development- Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam. 300,000sqm of commercial & residential buildings. The works comprised design concepts for engineering systems and structures for 7 residential towers including retails on ground levels
  • Grosvenor Place- Sydney. BCA upgrade and Tenancy fit out work. The works included design, documents, tender, builder selection, construction supervision of the upgrade works (building and engineering systems) to bring this building to compliance with the BCA
  • Latitude East- Sydney. New office and retail building in Park St, Sydney. The works comprised design and documents of the mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and fire system for this new building. The construction was completed in 2006
  • Queen Victoria Building- Sydney. BCA upgrade and air conditioning upgrade. The works included design, documents, tender and construction inspections for the upgrade works required o bring this building to compliance with BCA. The project was completed in 2007
  • Castle Tower Shopping Center, Castle Hill. Retail complex. I was responsible for the management of the design and construction of the mechanical services systems serving this shopping complex
  • Centro Bankstown Shopping Center, Bankstown. I acted as the Project Manager in charge of the design and construction quality of the engineering services systems.

1989-2000 Waterman AHW Ltd Sydney: Project Manager

Managed and controlled the HVAC design and supervision works of the following major projects:

  • 2 Park St office, Sydney. An office and retail building. The project was shelved after the completion of the design stage
  • The Galleries Victoria Shopping Complex, Sydney. Upgrade works only
  • TRW factory upgrade work, Marrickville
  • NSW Southern Region Sewage pumping stations, NSW. Up grade works

1986-1989 Building Services Co-partnership Ltd Wellington, NZ: Director & Partner

I was one of the 3 directors and share holders of the company, whose main activities included design and construct of HVAC systems for commercial buildings in NZ. The company employed 60 staff. I Managed and controlled the company engineering works of the following major projects:

  • 101 Lambton Quay, Wellington, NZ. An office and retail building
  • Mainzeal Head Office, Wellington, NZ. Office and retail building
  • Data Bank Computer Center, Auckland, New Zealand. Data processing center for Data Bank NZ
  • Huntly Power Station, Huntly, NZ. A coal fire power station

1982-1986 General Electric Company - GEC (NZ) Porirua, NZ: Engineering Director

GEC was a very large international company with head office in UK. The company specialized in the following industries: Defense, electronics, telecommunications and heavy engineering products. My brief role and responsibilities included:

  • New Zealand Electrification and Upgrade of NZ Steel: As part of the ‘Think Big’ scheme, the NZ government launched into larger infrastructure . I was acting as the Company Project Director, my role was to liaise with the NZ government department heads and guide the expert English teams in designing and bidding for these large projects. GEC ended up winning 2 majors projects being: Electrification of the Railways from Auckland to Wellington and the Upgrade of the manufacturing facilities of NZ Steel. These 2 projects were worth 120 million to GEC. During the design and construction phases, I participated with the GEC specialist teams from England in coordination and management of the works

Vietnam Business
  • 1995 -2005 : Share holders of Sai Gon Engineering Company,(SGE) a Mechanical/Electrical/Hydraulic Contractor based in Ho Chi Minh city. The company employed 500 staff with a factory near Tan Son Nhat airport. Projects completed included: New World Hotel, Saigon Towers, Coca Cola factory, My Thuan bridge..etc. In 2002, SGE joint ventured with Schindler Lift to set up Schindler Vietnam with a factory manufacturing components and assembling lifts. In 2005 the joint venture company was sold to Schindler International and my share in SGE was sold to staff ending my involvement and investment in this company
  • 2000- 2007: share holder in Truong An Tourist company, this company operate a large holiday resort in Vinh Long city of the Mekong Delta (South of Vietnam)
  • 1997- 2000: Acting as Business Facilitator and Lobbyist for Bauderstone Hornibrook Ltd (Australia). We won the contract of building the first cable stayed bridge in Vietnam, the bridge is located in the Mekong Delta and was completed in May 2000
  • 2001 – 2004; acting as Business advisor for Bilfinger Berger (Germany) in a court case involving a default payment of $US 5 million
  • 1996- 1999: acting as Project Management advisor for FIDECO (a large import/export organization) in the design of Pasteur Tower, the project changed its name to Fideco Tower and was completed in 2007
  • 2004-2005: Assisted Waterman AHW and Clifton Coney in winning the MEP services and Project Management packages for Saigon Pearl Towers project, the towers were built in 2007
